1. STREAMLINE DISTRIBUTION OPERATIONS - improve and streamline your packaging and distribution operations.  Increase mailroom efficiency, improve delivery performance, reduce distribution costs, investigate opportunities for outsourcing and partnering, and plan for future changes.

    • Over the past 25 years, Roggen Management Consultants has performed all-inclusive reviews of packaging and distribution operations, created efficient new layouts for mailrooms, docks and distribution centers, engineered delivery vehicle specifications, evaluated proposed delivery fleet leases, and developed complex routing and on-time delivery models to facilitate effective design and improvement of newspaper delivery networks.

2. CREATE A DISTRIBUTOR FEE FORMULA - develop engineered fee formulas for large and small distributors, make quick equitable adjustments for route consolidations and draw changes, accommodate routes serving multiple publications, track fuel price fluctuations within the formula, and eliminate “fat” and “skinny” routes.

    • Back in the 1980′s we initiated the pilot program for reimbursement of vehicle operating expenses to contracted home delivery and single copy distributors at the Washington Post.  This was followed over the years by other successful contractor compensation programs at the Houston Chronicle, the Chicago Tribune, USA Today, the Sacramento Bee, the Dallas Morning News, and the Providence Journal.

3. IMPROVE PREPRINT ZONING ACCURATELY - eliminate mal-delivery of preprints resulting from geographic mismatch of delivery route and ad zone boundaries, simplify product mix in the field by dedicating distribution centers and bulk drops to specific ad zones, reduce loading delays resulting from multiple zones on a truck, and increase the efficiency of home delivery routes.

    • To support the requirement for more accurately zoned preprints, Roggen Management Consultants has performed numerous projects to realign home delivery districts and routes with advertising zones, thereby allowing for the creation of “ad zone specific” distribution centers and drops, and achieving more accurate delivery of preprints by carriers. These market realignment projects, which utilize GIS and route development software to restructure routes, typically also produce improved home delivery efficiencies and significant cost savings.

4. INCREASE EFFICIENCIES WHILE IN TRANSITION - identify opportunities for cost reduction and new revenue streams, through improved operating efficiencies, consolidation, outsourcing, partnering, and alternate distribution - while working simultaneously to monetize your newspaper’s presence on the web.

    • Over the past several years, the emergence of the digital revolution has disrupted traditional media business models, causing many newspaper companies to experience significant financial challenges while they experiment with different strategies to monetize their presence on the Internet. Accordingly, our efforts for newspapers during this period have been focused on streamlining print operations and reducing costs.
